Why do the moderators delete my posts? |
|
If you aren't sure what happened, email the moderator and (politely) ask if he/she can tell you.
In general, posts will be moved if they:
- contain information considered to be spoilers, and were posted in a non-spoiler forum
- are offensive in language or content
- are duplicates of previous posts
- are empty, pointless posts to which no reply is necessary
- are detrimental to the messageboard atmosphere and/or community
Often, the moderator will email you about a post when he/she deletes/edits it. If you don't have an email address listed or you don't often check your email at the address you listed, you may have missed this courtesy. Additionally, if the site is busy, the moderators don't always have time to email each person that they need to edit. This is especially true if you've made the same breach in netiquette before.

Why are the moderators so tense? There wasn't anything explicit in my post. Why can't they just get over it?! We're all grown-ups here. |
|
No, actually we're not all grown-ups. Additionally, you agreed to the TOS when you registered, so you have no right to cross the line.
When it comes to questionable posts, especially ones involving sexual innuendo, a judgement call has to be made. The people who make those calls are the moderators. If we wanted you to make the call, you would be the moderator. Apparently you're not.
Let the moderators do their job. As far as questionable posts go, we feel it is better to err on the side of caution. Part of this is because we want people to be comfortable here. Star Wars isn't about sex. If that's what you want to talk about, go to a different kind of messageboard.
George Lucas keeps saying that Star Wars is a movie for kids. We're going to take him at his word and keep this site kid-friendly.

Why did my post get deleted as soon as I put it up, when someone else's was worse, and it was up for an entire day before anyone made a fuss? |
|
Our moderators are volunteers-- despite the fact that moderating may actually be a full-time job, our moderators actually have other jobs to fill that space in their lives. They aren't all online 24/7. Your post may have been deleted quicker because a moderator just happened to be online and reading the post list at the time.
Additionally, if you knew your post would cause a fuss, why did you post it? Don't do that.
|
Why did the moderator delete/edit me without even asking me first? I didn't mean what he/she thought I meant!! |
|
Well, if the moderator could take it the wrong way, so could other people-- the moderator probably wanted to take care of it before any problems could arise. Moderators try to take care of things as they see them because this board isn't the only thing they do, and they can't spend too much time deliberating. This probably means that the moderator didn't have time to email you before he/she acted.
Remember, the moderators are only human, and they do the best they can. They are volunteers, and they spend a lot of time working on this site so that you can post here.
Having the title under your named changed to Grand Moff or Emperor doesn't make you suddenly omniscient or omnipresent. The moderators use their best judgement, and they don't intend to offend. Please be understanding.
Remember, we try to err on the side of caution here, so we'd rather take care of something before it goes too far-- not after.

One of my posts disappeared! Where did it go, and why? |
|
Be careful-- you may be misremembering where you posted it. Check other related threads before you panic.
If it is actually gone, it was most likely deleted by a moderator. A moderator might have deleted (or transferred) a post if it was questionable or if it contained possible spoilers and was posted in a nonspoiler forum. The Imperial Spy is our spoiler forum-- check there.
|
A thread that I started has been locked! How and why did this happen? |
|
Administrators and moderators have the ability to lock threads.
- Sometimes threads are locked because tempers are running high, and people need to cool down before the discussion is continued.
- Sometimes threads are locked because the thread topic is deemed inappropriate for the scope of this message board.
- Sometimes threads are locked because they need to be transferred.

A moderator just moved/closed/edited my post. Why do they hate me? Why do they attack me all the time? |
|
The moderator isn't attacking you and doesn't hate you.
The moderator is just trying to do his/her job, which is to uphold the TOS. It is also your job, as a member, to help with that.
Please don't take it as a personal affront if a moderator alters your post/thread. Moderation is not intended that way. A moderator may not like the placement of a thread (etc.), but that is not a reflection of his/her feelings for you. Please don't jump to conclusions. The moderators are here to help.
|
Why was my thread/post transferred? |
|
This does not indicate that anyone is unhappy with your thread topic. It simply means that the topic was deemed more appropriate for a different forum on the messageboard.
If you suspect that the thread has been moved to a different forum, check your mail at email address that you registered with. The moderators try to let you know when they transfer your threads.
We try to make a policy not to move threads unless it is really necessary, but sometimes it has to happen. Especially in the case of spoiler transfers, but occasionally for other reasons as well.
|
Why was my thread moved to the spoiler forum? Does that mean that the speculation in it was true? How do you know that what we were saying is what will actually take place in the film?? Are you George Lucas? |
|
No, I am not Uncle George.
One or more moderators must have felt that the thread contained possible spoilers. That does not mean it was necessarily on target. It simply means it might have been, and we'd rather be safe than sorry.
|
Hey! You censored me out of context. There was nothing offensive about what I posted! |
|
The administrators have the power to auto-censor certain words. This censoring is not an exact science, however, so occasionally words are censored out of context. Please realize that the censoring is being done by a computer-- it is a simple screening program, and does not take context into account.
Words that are censored are replaced with asterisks.
|
Why was my thread moved into a different forum? What was wrong with the forum that I had chosen for it? |
|
If your thread didn't contain possible spoilers, there was probably nothing wrong with your forum choice. More likely, a moderator of some other forum liked it so much that he/she "had to have it" for that forum.
The preferred method is actually to restart the thread in the new forum, so that it can grow on it's own. If you weren't given the chance to do that, perhaps the moderator couldn't reach you via email.
If other members (or moderators) comment that your thread would be well placed in a different forum, you might want to consider reposting the authoring post in the other forum-- this often helps bring new life into both the thread and the forum. (Or better still, you might rewrite the authoring post a bit to make it even more appropriate for the new forum before you post it.)
Please don't start by posting a thread in multiple forums at the same time though. That path leads to deletion. Only cross-post a thread when it is already running and there is justification for starting it elsewhere.
|
Why did the moderator edit my quote? |
|
You probably quoted excessively or unneccessarily.
It is considered bad manners to quote-out an entire five paragraph post (which everyone already read) when you only intend to refer to one line from it. Delete the rest of the message. Retain only the part that you are making direct mention of.
It is also bad manners to quote things that are obvious-- don't quote-out images, for example.
Perhaps the moderator is trying to teach you a bit of netiquette.
|
What do you mean, "empty post?" |
|
"Empty posts" are the ones that say, "Oh." or "Yeah." and very little else. Not only do they rouse the suspicion that you are posting merely to increase your total, but they also tend to kill the threads that they're posted in-- when you post "Hmm," there isn't anything for anyone to reply to. The thread dies a sad death because of your lazy posting. That's bad for the board and it doesn't reflect well on you either.
In an attempt to keep threads moving we sometimes delete any empty posts that appear at the end of them-- especially if they look like "post-total increasers."
